First to Sail Around Africa's Southern Tip: Hanno the Navigator
Hanno the Navigator: Earliest Claimed Circumnavigation of Africa
Hanno the Navigator (Carthaginian, ~500 BCE) is the first recorded explorer claiming to have sailed around Africa's southern tip.
His Voyage (Periplus of Hanno)
- Departure: Carthage (modern Tunisia)
- West African Coast: Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal River (encountered Lixitae people)
- Trade: Exchanged goods for gold, ivory, animal hides
- Wildlife: Described "hairy wild people" (possibly gorillas), elephants, rhinos
- Cerne Island: Likely Herne Island, Mauritania
- Gulf of Guinea: Possibly reached Sierra Leone/Cameroon
- Return: Brought goods/animals as proof
Historical Debate
The Periplus survives in Greek translation; authenticity debated. Some consider it mixed fact and myth. Later Phoenician/Greek voyages likely occurred but lack records. The true first circumnavigator remains uncertain due to limited ancient documentation.
