Sudan's Tribal Diversity: Over 597 Distinct Groups

Sudan is one of Africa's most ethnically diverse nations, with over 597 recognized tribes. Major groups include:

  • Dinka – Largest in South Sudan (now separate country), pastoralists.
  • Nuer – Nilotic, cattle-herding, South Sudan.
  • Fur – Darfur, farmers.
  • Beja – Eastern Sudan/Red Sea Hills, nomadic.
  • Nubians – Northern Sudan, Nile Valley.
  • Masalit – Darfur/Chad border.
  • Azande – Southwestern Sudan.
  • Taisha – Darfur.

Each tribe has its own language/dialect, customs, social organization, and historical territory. Arabic is the lingua franca; Islam predominates in the north, Christianity/traditional beliefs in the south.

Despite diversity, a shared Sudanese national identity coexists with tribal affiliations, though conflicts over resources, representation, and autonomy have driven prolonged civil wars.
