The Two Oceans Bordering Africa: Atlantic and Indian
Africa's Maritime Boundaries
The African continent is flanked by two major oceans:
- Atlantic Ocean – Western coast, from Strait of Gibraltar to Cape Agulhas. Includes Mediterranean Sea (north), Gulf of Guinea, Benguela Current.
- Indian Ocean – Eastern coast, from Suez Canal / Red Sea to Cape Agulhas. Includes Mozambique Channel, Arabian Sea, monsoon-driven currents.
Meeting Point
At Cape Agulhas (34°50′S, 20°00′E)—not Cape of Good Hope—the Atlantic and Indian Oceans officially meet (International Hydrographic Organization definition).
Strategic Implications
- Trade routes: Cape Route (Europe–Asia), Suez shortcut.
- Fisheries: Benguela (west) & Agulhas (south) upwellings; Somali Current (northeast).
- Climate: Atlantic cools west coast (Namib Desert); Indian Ocean warms east (tropical).
Together, these oceans define Africa's climate, economy, and global connectivity.
