According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department website, fire pits with a cooking surface of less than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height with a spark-arresting screen no more than 1 inch clearance is permitted. The website states that the fire pit must be located in a backyard, at least 15 feet from any structure, tree, or other combustible materials. The fire pit must also be located in a safe area, away from any overhead wires or power lines. The use of accelerants such as gasoline or kerosene is prohibited. The fire must be extinguished completely before leaving the fire pit unattended.
