Sleep Away Camps in Northern California

North California has many sleep away camps that kids and parents can choose from. Camps can be located near lakes and rivers, in mountains, and wooded areas. Sleeping accommodations range from tents and sleeping bags to cabins and lodges. Some camps specialize in certain activities such as horse riding and circus and performing arts. The staff running the campground is often well trained and some camps allow parents to visit.
  1. Skylake Yosemite Camp

    • Skylake Yosemite Camp is located on Bass Lake in the California Sierra National Forest. The Skylake Yosemite Camp website claims that it's a location where kids build life-long friendships due to its family like atmosphere. Kids ages 7 and up, from grades 1 through 10 are welcome. Bass Lake offers water activities such as swimming, water skiing, tubing, and boating. The wooded area around the camp allows campers to ride horses and participate in a rope course. Other activities include sand volleyball, tennis, softball and making arts and crafts. First-time campers can choose to stay one or two weeks, but 4 week programs are also available. As for safety, the camp's staff is fully trained and all know CPR and First Aid.

    Camp Winnarainbow

    • Camp Winnarainbow has been in business more than 30 years and is located in Mendocino County. The circus and performing arts camp has programs for kids and for adults. Kids ages 7 to 14 can stay for one or two week sessions and adults can visit the camp on a daily or weekly basis. Activities camper can participate in include clowning, miming, juggling, stilt walking, dancing, gymnastics, making arts and crafts, learning magic, martial arts, swimming and more. Kids will sleep in custom-made fire proof tipis. At all times of the day, registered nurse is on duty and some of the staff is trained in CPR and First-Aid.

    Camp Trinity

    • Camp Trinity is located on 450 acres of wilderness in Trinity County and accommodates kids ages 8 to 16. The camp's website states that it has been in business for 78 years and aims to challenge kids to develop new skills, gain self esteem and develop friendships. Supervised activities include animal care, building projects, gardening, cooking and more. Campers will sleep in cabins that can accommodate up to 15 people. Guestrooms are available for visiting parents. Kids can be enrolled for 2-week and 3-week sessions.
