Federal Campgrounds in Michigan

There are many federal campgrounds in Michigan that campers can enjoy. Campers can choose from camping in wooded areas to camping near lakes and on islands. Various campgrounds are open all year round and allow winter sport activities such as skiing and snowboarding. You will find primitive campgrounds with limited to no facilities and developed campgrounds with paved roads and warm water. Whether you prefer staying in a tent, RV, cabin or pop-out trailer, Michigan's federal campgrounds can accommodate you.
  1. Isle Royale National Park

    • The campground at Isle Royale National Park provides group sites, three-sided shelters and tent sites. Because of the harsh winter conditions, this federal park is closed during winter months. The island can be reached by crossing the northwest section of Lake Superior by boat or seaplane. Campers can stay in a tent or in the Rock Harbor Lodge overlooking the lake. The lodge has 60 rooms available accommodating four people maximum. There are also 20 housekeeping rooms with kitchenettes and bunk beds. Campground activities include canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving and hiking. Campers can also enjoy various ranger-led programs. Nearby attractions include Keweenaw National Historic Park, Hiawatha National Forest and Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Overnight stays on the island require a permit, which will be distributed upon arrival. There is a fee for group permits.
