National Forest Campgrounds in California

Whether campers are looking to explore nature, learn about endangered species or engage in sportsman activities such as hunting and fishing, California's national forests have a little something for them. Campers can stay on designated campgrounds, in the wilderness or even in lookout towers. Accommodations vary from park to park, and it is always a good idea to check the fire safety levels, as fire restrictions vary depending on alert levels.
  1. Sierra

    • Located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, the Sierra National Forest encompasses 1.3 million acres of oak-covered foothills, middle elevations slopes and alpine landscapes. The park website recommends making reservations for campgrounds--which can be up to a year in advance-- and notes you will need a visitor permit for overnight stays in the wilderness areas. You may hunt and fish during California Department of Fish and Game's designated seasons and will need a license.

The park has guided walks that explore the various campgrounds as well as the Trail of 100 Giants, river rafting, and a lot of kid's activities, like Animal Inn, which teaches kids and adults about habitats in the park. Some lookout towers are available for rental, as well as guard cabins.
