National Forest Campgrounds in South Fork, Colorado

Rio Grande National Forest includes 1.86 million acres of protected forest land located to the north, south and west of South Fork, Colo. The forest offers a multitude of outdoor recreational opportunities. Miles of trails provide ample hiking, and at the headwaters of the Rio Grande River, there are plenty of places to fish, canoe and kayak in the forest's many lakes and streams. Birdwatchers will appreciate the variety of species that reside within the park, from owls and hummingbirds to bald eagles.
  1. Big Meadows Campground

    • Big Meadows campground is located above the Big Meadows Reservoir, at an elevation of 9,500 feet. The campground contains 53 tent or RV sites with no utility hookups or dump station. Each site offers a picnic table and grill, and seven water spigots are located on the site. Big Meadows Reservoir is a 600-acre lake that features fishing for rainbow, brown and brook trout. The six-mile Archuleta Trail offers access to the Weminuche Wilderness.

    Cathedral Campground

    • Cathedral Campground features 29 campsites situated along the Cathedral Creek in two loops. The left loop is more open and is located in a meadow. The right loop features campsites in a dense aspen and spruce forest. Four of the campsites are tent only, and all sites include a picnic table and grill. Water can be drawn from a hand pump on the right-hand loop. No hookups or waste station facilities are available for RVs. Cathedral Campground offers vault toilets only with no shower facilities. Hikers will enjoy the 3.5-mile Cathedral Lake Trail and rainbow trout are stocked in the creek.

    Park Creek Campground

    • Park Creek Campground sites are situated along the creek in a forest of mature spruce trees. The campground offers 12 individual sites and boasts of a feeling of spacious seclusion. All sites are considered primitive, with only vault toilets and a hand water pump available. Fishing for rainbow trout is available in Park Creek.
