Free Campgrounds in Arizona

With such a diverse landscape spanning from deserts, to mountains and forests, Arizona is full of scenery and natural beauty. There are many areas within the national forests of Arizona that provide free campgrounds for overnight accommodations no longer than 14 days. Although these campgrounds are often rustic with limited facilities, they still provide endless opportunities for recreation, wildlife viewing and relaxation.
  1. Hannagan Campground

    • Hannagan Campground can be found within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest along U.S. Highway 191. Situated at an elevation of 9,120 ft. above sea level, this is one of the highest campgrounds in the state. The campground is located in a tall, mature forest and offers eight campsites suitable for tents, trailers and R's less than 16 ft. long. Campsites are rustic and feature picnic tables, fire rings with cooking grills, access to well water and vault toilets. This campground has no electricity hookups. All campsites have access to a large network of hiking trails that meander throughout the entire forest. Pets are allowed but they must be restrained or on a leash. This campground is open year-round.

    Stockton Pass Campground

    • Stockton Pass Campground can be found within the Coronado National Forest along State Route 266. The campground is situated at the apex of the Stockton Pass, which serves as a travel way over the Pinaleño Mountains into Sulphur Springs Valley. The campground is located among a desert grassland shaded with oak trees and offers seven campsites suitable for tents, trailers and RVs less than 25 ft. in length. Campsites are rustic and feature picnic tables, fire rings with cooking grills and vault toilets. This campground has no electricity hookups and does not provide access to water, so visitors should make sure to bring their own. It is important to note that this campground is located within Black Bear Country and several safety precautions are advised. The park provides bear-resistant garbage cans for all waste and suggests keeping all food out of reach of wild animals. Pets are allowed but they must leashed at all times. This campground is open year-round.

    Clints Well Campground

    • Clints Well Campground can be found within the Coconino National Forest along State Route 87. The campground is situated near a junction of two major roads which provide convenient access to the entire forest. The campground is located below the shade of old ponderosa pine trees and offers seven campsites suitable for tents, trailers and RVs no more than 22 ft. long. Campsites are rustic and feature picnic tables, fire rings with cooking grills and vault toilets. This campground has no electricity hookups and does not provide access to drinking water, so guests should make sure to bring their own. Each campsite has access to several hiking trails that wind throughout the whole forest. Pets are allowed but they must always be restrained or on a leash. This campground is open year-round.
