Campgrounds in Portal, Arizona

In the northeast corner of the Coronado National Forest of Arizona is the town of Portal. Many outdoor enthusiasts in the area enjoy the lush scenery the San Simon Valley has to offer, as well as the nearby Cave Creek Canyon. Bird watchers flock to the area to participate in bird tours and various birding adventures. Remote campsites in the area accommodate small groups of campers who wish to spend a few days near either hiking, birding or just being amidst the forest of ponderosas and Apache pines.
  1. Herb Martyr Campground

    • Just seven miles south of Portal on the banks of Cave Creek sits the small Herb Martyr Campground, named after Herb Martyr. Nearby is a dam originally built in 1935, but that has since been filled in with sediment and debris. Herb Martyr was a worker who was killed during the construction of the dam. The campground features seven individual sites. One site is positioned on the banks of the stream, while the other six sites are located on the bench of Cave Creek. Tables, fire grills and toilets are the only amenities offered.
