The Hilltop Campground in the Prescott National Forest is just east of the city, off State Route 69. One of two campgrounds in the Lynx Lake Recreation Area, Hilltop has 37 campsites and costs $18 per night as of February 2010. The campground offers recreational gold panning and is about a mile from boating and trout fishing at Lynx Lake, as well as a general store. From State Route 69, turn south on Walker Road and continue 3.2 miles to the campground sign. Turn left and travel 0.3 miles to the campground.

Primarily a group campground, Upper Wolf Creek is an ideal spot for a large gathering. With the ability to accommodate up to 30 vehicles and 100 campers, the site has horseshoe pits and a volleyball court, equipment for which can be obtained from the campground host. The area is surrounded by boulders and trees, making for some inspired hiking. From Prescott, take White Spar Road south for 6 miles, turn left on FR 97 and travel another 5.5 miles to Upper Wolf.

A truly scenic campground, Yavapai has a series of rocky cliffs and is only a short walk from Granite Basin Lake, where anyone with an Arizona fishing license can try to catch catfish, bluegill and largemouth bass. Yavapai's 25 campsites cost $10 each per night as of February 2010. There are no hookups for RVs, but there are picnic tables and grills at each and the campground has drinking water. Manzanita and other growth keep this campground very secluded. From Prescott, take Iron Springs Road west 3.1 miles to Granite Basin Road. Turn right and continue 2.1 miles to Yavapai.

Offering 60 campsites and a paved road system, White Spar is one of the more accessible campgrounds in the Prescott area and is very close to the city. With Ponderosa pines and good separation between sites, White Spar is both picturesque and private. Campsites cost $14 a night as of February 2010 and don't offer any utility hookups. From Prescott, take State Route 89 south 0.5 miles, turn left onto School House Gulch and enter the campground.
