Indian Holidays Camps for Kids

The concept of summer camp is still relatively new to India. While popular in northern India, camps are just beginning to catch on as a trend in the southern regions. Often referred to as "holiday camps", Indian camps are modeled after their American counterpart, focusing on various ages and interests of children including wildlife, sports, and personal development.
  1. Frolic Boonies

    • Located in Ooty Tamil Nadu, approximately a five hour drive from the city of Bangalore, children aged seven to sixteen are invited to sign up for a week-long holiday camp, which run through April and May of each calendar year. A typical day at camp includes trail hiking, horseback riding, arts and crafts, fishing, airplane modeling, chocolate making and astronomy. Throw in some Indian traditions such as tea time and summer camp rituals like a campfire barbecue, and children enjoy a well-rounded week in the great outdoors.

    Gjnasa

    • Gjnasa Summer Camp is located in Ooty, Nilgiri Hills in India, and is self-described as unique due to its one-activity focus. The name of the camp comes from the Sanskrit word "jigyasa", which literally means curiousity and inquiry. The camp centers itself upon the idea of self-discovery, allowing children to express themselves creatively through games, music, campfires and journaling. The camp is six days long, and includes field trips to sites including a wildlife sanctuary, the Toda Tribal Village and St. Stephen's Church. There are four six-day camps each year, all occurring in May.

    Pugmarks Holidays

    • Pugmarks Holidays features a wide variety of camps for children of all ages. Each camp has a different focus and location. One example is Tree Tops Panchangani for ages eight to ten. Campers arrive at Congress Bhavan near Pune at seven a.m. on the first day, and prepare for four days of fun and exploration. Activities include an obstacle course, craft time, sky watching, hiking, and learning about various mountains, valleys, rocks and rivers in the region. Campers also participate in group competitions and treasure hunts. Camp ends with a farewell party and the price of camp includes all-vegetarian meals, transportation and lodging. Camps run from April through the first few days of May.

    Nature Trails

    • Nature Trails offers outdoors camps for students, including teens aged 14 and older. Leadership in the Jungle includes teachings in rope knotting, jungle cooking, rock climbing and team building. Aeromodeling is a five day camp that features a basic paragliding course for teens. Finally, White Water Rafting trains students on the basics of safety, paddling, and calls during a white water rafting adventure. Camp concludes with a 12 kilometer run on River Kundalika. These holiday camps are located throughout various parts of India, and can be arranged for different parts of the year. Most camps commence during the late spring. Campers must contact Nature Trails directly, or go through a local school group to experience all they have to offer.
