It is inaccurate to say that any single person or group "discovered" Algeria. The region has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with a rich tapestry of human settlement spanning millennia. Over the centuries, it has been home to a succession of civilizations and cultures, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, and Ottomans.
The modern nation-state of Algeria, as it exists today, emerged following the Algerian War of Independence, gaining sovereignty from France in 1962. Rather than a moment of discovery, Algeria's story is one of continuous habitation, cultural exchange, and eventual self-determination.
