Will California one day sink into the ocean?
California is not in danger of sinking into the ocean. The theory that California will break off from the rest of North America and slide into the ocean is highly speculative. The San Andreas Fault, which is the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates, is a strike-slip fault, meaning that the motion is primarily horizontal rather than vertical. While earthquakes can cause significant ground shaking and damage, they do not cause land masses to sink into the ocean.
