What is the traditional wear in Gambia?
In Gambia, traditional dress for both men and women is called a
boubou. It consists of a long, loose-fitting kaftan-style garment that is worn over a shorter undergarment. For women, the boubou is often made from a brightly coloured fabric and can be adorned with intricate embroidery or beading. Men's boubous are typically made from a more sober fabric and are usually plain.
In addition to the boubou, other traditional garments worn in Gambia include the sarong, a length of fabric that can be wrapped around the body in various ways, and the gele, a headscarf that is tied in a variety of styles.
Traditional dress is often worn for special occasions such as weddings, festivals, and religious ceremonies, but some people also wear it as everyday attire.
