How did Rwanda get its name?

There are different theories about the origin of the name "Rwanda". Here are a few of them:

1. "Ruguru w'Anda" (The Hilly Land): One theory suggests that the name Rwanda comes from the Kinyarwanda word "Ruguru w'Anda", meaning "the land of a thousand hills". Rwanda is indeed known for its lush and hilly landscape.

2. "Rurema" (The Expanse): Another theory derives the name Rwanda from the word "Rurema", meaning "the expanse" or "the wide space". This may refer to the vast savannah grasslands that used to cover parts of Rwanda before they were converted into agricultural land.

3. "Rwandalura" (Land of Rwandans): Some believe that the name Rwanda comes from "Rwandalura", which means "land of Rwandans" or "land of the people who speak the Rwanda language". This theory associates the name with the dominant Bantu ethnic group in Rwanda.

4. Etymology from Burundi: Linguist Jan Vansina argues that the name Rwanda, as well as the ethnonym of the Banyarwanda, likely originated from the neighboring country of Burundi. Burundi was formerly called Urundi, and according to Vansina, "Rwand-" might be a shortened version of "rUrundi wa-", which means "he of Burundi" or "someone who comes from Urundi". Vansina suggests that the original name of the Rwanda Kingdom might have been "Rw'urundi", meaning "the people of Burundi" or "people from Burundi".

It's important to note that these are just theories, and the exact origin of the name "Rwanda" is still a subject of debate among scholars and historians.
