Mansa Musa was a Muslim. He was the tenth Mansa (emperor) of the Mali Empire, which is in present-day Mali, and ruled from 1312 to 1337. He is known for his great wealth and for his famous pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324, during which he brought a vast amount of gold, which astounded the people of the cities that he passed through.
