Kigali is the capital and largest city in Rwanda with a population of 851,024 as of the 2005 Rwandan census. It was established as the capital when Rwanda became independent from Belgium in 1962. It represents Rwanda's center of commerce, culture and transport. Despite the city's tropical location, it is situated on a relatively high altitude which gives it a cooler climate.
Batare, with a population of 77,449 in 2006, is the second largest city in Rwanda. It was known as Astrida and was the Rwandan capital before independence. The city is notable for hosting several museums and universities, and is therefore regarded as the intellectual center of Rwanda. Gitarama may be regarded as the third largest city but has a population on par with Batare. The city is technically part of the Kigali municipal area, but administered separately.
Ruhengeri, the fourth largest city, is a small market town located in the northern part of Rwanda. It is often visited by tourists as a starting point before moving on to visit and watch the mountain gorillas in the neighboring areas. Gisenyi town, the fifth largest, is primarily a lake resort located on the northern bank of Lake Kivu. The sixth largest city, Byumba, shares its border with neighboring Uganda and is known for hosting the SOS Children's village, a non-profit organization that strives to protect the rights of children.
Cyangugu, with a population of 19,900 according to the 2002 census is the seventh largest city and sits on the southern end of Lake Kivu. The city is split into two parts, one of which is a resort town on the lake, and the other an industrial and transport hub. Rwamagana, the eighth largest, has a population of 47,203 as of 2002 and is about 30 miles from Kigali and borders Tanzania. The city serves as a transport hub for these reasons. Kibuye, the ninth largest, is a market town located in the west and is well known as a beach resort. Kibungo, with a 2002 population of 45,582, is the tenth largest city and is located to the south-east. The city is known for being a distribution center for the local banana production.
