This tough-talking city is home to the Manchester United Football -- soccer for you Americans --- team, a team followed closely by ravenous fans. Perhaps because of this diehard football obsession, or maybe due to the notoriously rainy weather, Foursquare users filled their check-in posts with curse words, giving this city the No. 1 spot on the poll.
Traffic-rich Los Angeles is full of hustle and bustle, leaving little time for pleasantries commonly associated with politeness. Whether it's the influence of the smog-filled air or simply the ready-for-business attitude of many of its residents, this city managed to take the top spot on "Travel and Leisure's" 2010 list.
Culturally rich and perennially balmy El Paso took the second seat on the Foursquare list. This placement seems to indicate that along with cowboys and southwestern designs, this rough-and-tumble Southern city may be heavy in rude residents as well.
The Big Apple is home to many movers and shakers, a plethora of artists and their works and, apparently, some downright rude residents. Like Los Angeles, which also scored highly on the "Travel and Leisure" list, New York City is a place of constant frenetic activity and a city that never sleeps.
Pittsburgh is home to the world-famous Steelers, along with the now largely defunct steel industry for which the team was named. This home-of-the-workingman town is full of residents who work hard for their money, perhaps leaving them a bit too tired to be as polite as some would like, earning it the No. 3 space on Foursquare's list.
While Pennsylvania residents may wish they only occupied one space on this list, sadly they hold two; the historically significant city of Philadelphia takes the No. 3 seat on the "Travel and Leisure" list. While the city is undeniably steeped in history, readers of this magazine did not feel that the residents of Philadelphia were as courteous as they perhaps should be.
Bloomington, Indiana, home to Indiana University, is known not just for the educational institution it houses, but also for the stunning limestone architecture that fills the city. This small and, during the off-season, sedate Indiana city takes the No. 4 spot on Foursquare's list.
Coming in at No. 4 on the "Travel and Leisure" list of rudest cities is picturesque Miami. While this Florida city scores high points with tourists as far as natural wonders are concerned, the miles of sandy coastline are not enough to make up for the self-professed rudeness of the residents. As "Travel and Leisure" reports, not only did tourists rank this city high in rudeness, the residents themselves stated that they felt they were rude to outsiders.
Though the city of Riverside earns big points for housing intelligent citizens, taking the No. 7 spot in a 2011 Intelligent Community of the Year competition, all this brain power doesn't help the residents remember their manners, suggests Foursquare, ranking this suburban California city at No. 5 on its poll.
While it would seem fitting that the nation's capital welcomes visitors with open arms, such is not the case according to the "Travel and Leisure" poll, earning this city the No. 5 rudest ranking. Perhaps it earned its ranking because no city is more rife with loathed politicians or because the people who inhabit this city have the weight of the country weighing on their shoulders; whatever the reason, this city is likely not the one to visit if you are looking for the friendliest of receptions, suggests the poll.
