The Advantages of Migrating to the City

People might choose to migrate to the city from small town or rural locations for many reasons, but such moves are often made to better their lives. Cities offer a greater availability of services because of their larger populations, which provide a wider tax base. Backed by money and manpower, cities can afford to offer police and fire protection, infrastructure and opportunities that smaller communities cannot provide.
  1. Access

    • People might migrate for better access to medical care, education and entertainment. While less populated areas might have a clinic or doctor, you usually have to look to a larger city to find a hospital and specialized treatment. Instead of being limited to a single local or regional school -- sometimes at a great distance from home -- parents can often choose from among public, private and religious schooling options in larger metropolitan areas. Because the larger number of people support a wider variety of options, cities can maintain numerous restaurants, clubs, cinemas and other entertainment venues, museums and cultural outlets and offer better pay and incentives for teachers and physicians.

    Infrastructure

    • Migrants have the use of the infrastructure present in cities. Electricity, water and sewage services, roads and the ready availability of public transportation provide conveniences that make daily life easier. Water and sewage services improve sanitation, reducing disease. Electricity makes inexpensive entertainment and informal education possible through television and Internet access. A network of roads and supply of transportation options make it possible to travel to reach all of the amenities of the city, so that access to a supply of food, obtaining medicine and reaching a place of employment are all made easier.

    Housing and Employment

    • Cities offer a greater variety of housing choices and employment options. Small towns and villages might have a limited number of dwellings and only a narrow range of types of housing. Cities provide housing across a broad economic spectrum, with different styles, sizes and layouts to suit everyone from singles to large families.

Similarly, because of their large populations, cities have greater opportunities for employment, including service-sector jobs, white-collar positions and factory work. In villages and small towns, migrants might face limited prospects such as farming or low-paying manual labor jobs that offer no benefits or guarantee of pay in return for the work done.

    People

    • Densely populated cities provide access to a more expansive pool of people who might offer opportunities for friendship, dating and marriage. Larger towns and population centers contain people from a wide variety of religious, educational, economic and cultural backgrounds, providing migrants a better selection of potential mates and companions than can be found in small, insular communities.
