Cities With the Coolest Temperatures in Texas

The southern U.S. border state of Texas is known for its large size, arid climate, abundant wildlife and soaring temperatures. While much of Texas experiences hot weather, the panhandle region of the nation's 28th state is home to the municipalities with the lowest yearly recorded temperatures in the Lone Star State.
  1. Stratford, Texas

    • With an average yearly temperature of 55 degrees farenheit, this Sherman County town is home to 1991 Texans, according to the national population census of 2000. This town located on the Oklahoma border was named for the boyhood home of Virginia native Robert E Lee.

    Pampa, Texas

    • This 17,887-person city is located in the heart of the Texas panhandle and has an average yearly temperature of 56.9 degrees. The cooler climate seemingly has no effect on the annual Top O Texas rodeo held in this Gray County location, which is also the second largest city in the Texas panhandle region.

    Amarillo, Texas

    • The 14th-largest city in the state of Texas is known as the "Yellow Rose of Texas" and "Rotor City USA"--the latter due to the production of the U.S. military's V-22 Osprey aircraft within the city's borders. The city, which averages a yearly temperature of 57.2 degrees, also houses the nation's only nuclear weapon assembly plant. Amarillo won the 2010 Best of Texas Project excellence award for developments surrounding its emergency communications center.

    Plainview, Texas

    • The seat of Hale County, Texas, was the birthplace of well-known sausage magnate Jimmy Dean and Netscape founder and entrepreneur James H. Clark. The city of Plainview is also home to the main campus of the 7,000-student Waylan Baptist University. It has an average yearly temperature of 58.4 degrees.

    Levelland, Texas

    • This city of 13,000 is about 30 miles west of Lubbock in the state's south plains region. The Texas city has also gained fame as home to a number of reported U.F.O. sightings that allegedly took place in the late 1950s. With an average yearly temperature of 59.2 degrees, the north Texas town is also known as the city of mosaics, due to the number of mosaic-style paintings that adorn several buildings in the city.
