A Guide to the City of Katy, Texas

Katy, Texas, is located 30 miles west of Houston on Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 90. Historically, Katy is an agricultural area with rice as its major crop. Industrial sites near Katy have added to its thriving economy. Residents of Katy can enjoy a small town atmosphere while benefiting from the opportunities that go along with being near a big city.

      Obtain information to help you plan a tour of the city of Katy. The historic Missouri-Kansas-Texas Depot, located downtown, serves as an information and tourist center. You can get maps and brochures there and tour the Katy Heritage Society Railroad Museum inside the depot.

      Visit other museums. The Katy Heritage Museum displays vintage farming equipment and artifacts, old photographs and antiques. The Katy Veterans Memorial Museum is a first-class military exhibit that encompasses every foreign conflict involving the United States.

      Tour historical homes. Katy Heritage Park Historical Homes are open for tours the first full weekend of each month.

      Go swimming. Mary Jo Peckham Park has an indoor, Olympic-sized swimming pool and a playground area.

      Have a picnic. VFW Park has a large covered pavilion, barbecue pits and tables. If you prefer an indoor picnic, you can rent a meeting room in VFW Hall, a large air-conditioned building, which has two kitchens and four meeting rooms. Two of these rooms can hold groups of 100 each.

      Participate in sports. Katy City Park has softball and hardball field, tennis courts and a covered basketball pavilion. Harris County Park has soccer fields and baseball fields. Woodsland Park has a covered basketball pavilion.

      Attend a festival or rodeo. The Rice Harvest Festival, held during the second weekend of October, celebrates Katy's rich heritage. The event has food and craft booths, a carnival and family entertainment. The Katy Freedom Celebration, held on the 4th of July, features an evening fireworks display. The Folk Life Festival is held in April at the Kenneth D. Welch Outdoor Learning Center. The Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show and Rodeo is one of the largest school rodeos in the state.

      Go shopping. Katy Mills Mall has 200 retail establishments, such as Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet, Banana Republic Outlet and Ann Taylor Loft. In addition to outlets and specialty stores, the mall has a food court, theme restaurants and a state-of-the-art movie theater. La Centerra at Cinco Ranch has restaurants, outdoor community facilities and top retailers, such as Chico's, Talbots, Designs of the Interior, Gymboree and Nestle's Toll House Cafe.
