2. Kilwa: The Kilwa Sultanate was a Swahili city-state located on the southeastern coast of modern-day Tanzania. Kilwa was founded around the 10th century AD and grew into a bustling center of trade and commerce along the East African coast.
In the 14th century AD, Kilwa came under the influence of the Great Zimbabwe Kingdom and adopted Islam as its official religion. However, it maintained a significant Christian community and churches can still be found in the ruins of the city.
