Monuments of Southern Africa

A visit to the southern countries in Africa, particularly South Africa, is an experience rich in history and culture. For any tourist interested in events past, there are several monuments worth checking out, many of which are in major cities. Monuments in Cape Town and Johannesburg, two of South Africa's most populous cities, will provide valuable historical insight to all interested travelers.
  1. Delville Wood Monument

    • This monument, located in Cape Town, honors the memory of the South African soldiers who died fighting for Delleville Wood during the Somme offensive of World War I. The three-day battle took the lives of 116 officers and over two thousand soldiers. Across from the memorial is a statue of Brigadier General Lukin. Lukin was commander of the South African infantry during the Great War.

    Rhodes Memorial

    • The Rhodes memorial honors Cecil Rhodes, founder of the Rhodes scholarship, organizer of the DeBeers Diamond company and Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. The current monument sits on Devil's Peak, part of the Prime Minister's old estate. At the memorial, a horseman that symbolizes energy faces north to the rest of Africa, the continent that Rhodes held so dear.

    Voortrekker Monument and Museum

    • The Voortrekkers, similar to the covered wagon pioneers of the United States, headed out into the wilds of Africa to found a country of their own. This monument commemorates the endeavors of these Afrikaner pioneers. The site is one of the top 10 historical attractions in South Africa and is the most visited site of its kind in the Gauteng province. The Voortrekker Monument is located inside a preserve, so nature enthusiasts can top off their visit with a hike around the area.

    Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum

    • The Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum is located in Johannesburg's impoverished Soweto neighborhood. It honors Hector Pieterson, a 14-year-old boy and the first victim of police violence during a protest against the second rate Bantu schools for black children. It is across the street from the Holy Cross Church, and is very close to the old homes of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
