How to Rent a Camel in Cairo

Planning to visit Egypt's capital and Great Pyramid of Giza? The absolute best way to soak in this wonder of the ancient world is on the back of a camel--a truly Egyptian experience. But there are a few rules you should follow when hiring a camel and guide.

Instructions

    • 1

Rent your camel just outside the entrance to the Giza Plateau. Alternatively, you can pick up a camel behind the Sphinx once you're inside the Plateau.

    • 2

Expect to pay about 25 Egyptian pounds (US$4.40) per person plus tip for a camel. It's customary to pay after you return with the camel.

    • 3

Check out the condition of the camels before you rent one. Sadly, it's normal for the camels to appear undernourished, but they should not have sores or look beaten. Also, the stables in which they are kept should appear clean. If you're not satisfied, move on to the next spot.

    • 4

Tip your guide between 5 and 10 pounds (US90 cents to US$1.75). The only people who get out of tipping are those who ride on their own camels.
