How to Rent a Zipcar

Zipcar is a relatively new option for those who occasionally need a car for a few hours or a few days and live near one of the company's many hubs throughout the United States. Zipcar operates like a transportation club: members pay an annual fee, then reserve cars for the location, date, and time they need. They pay an additional fee for the time they use the car. Zipcar provides gas, insurance and maintenance on all cars.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to zipcar.com and look up your location to ensure there is a Zipcar hub near you. This program does not work if you cannot get to a car.

    • 2

Choose a plan. Zipcar has programs for individual drivers and for businesses. The basic occasional driver plan has an annual fee plus daily and hourly rates for car rental.

    • 3

Fill out the online application. You must be age 21 or older, have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. There is a one-time application fee of about $25.

    • 4

If you are approved to drive, you will receive a Zipcard pass in the mail, or you can pick it up at your local Zipcar office.

    • 5

Reserve your car. There are a variety of options at all Zipcar hubs. You will choose the car you want as well as date and amount of time you'll need it. You can reserve a car by phone or online.

    • 6

Pick up you car at the designated location, using your Zipcard to unlock it. Drive the car and return it to the place you picked it up.
