Stop by a car rental location at the airport. This has the most trusted rental locations, as facilities in the city are not national chains. Although it is possible to rent a vehicle from a local, these vehicles may be defective, and the roads are rather rough in the Bahamas. Additionally, the vehicles don't often have equipment to change a spare tire, should the problem occur.
Bring your driver's license and a major credit card. Most credit cards offer some sort of travel insurance when driving, which is helpful as not all rental locations offer insurance. Insurance from rental car companies can be expensive and being involved in an accident (even a slight fender bender) is common.
Select which car you want to drive. Take into consideration where you are driving. If you are going to enter high-crime neighborhoods, you should go with a smaller, inexpensive vehicle, to avoid attention. Crime rate in the Bahamas is especially high, and you don't want added risk.
Drive on the left side of the road. This is the only major difference between driving in the Bahamas than in the U.S, although it is a substantial one.
