How to Rent an RV in Illinois

It's time for a vacation in the breathtaking Illinois outdoors, but this time you want to avoid a backache from sleeping on the ground. RVs give you the comforts of home while providing accessibility to campgrounds. But driving or towing an RV is challenging for the driver who is used to a zippy little sedan. You'll want to consider many features and services before you rent an RV in Illinois, such as insurance, fuel consumption, destination and amenities.

Plan ahead and determine which Illinois wilderness areas you wish to visit. Popular campgrounds require reservations and are often booked months in advance. Find places to take an RV and stay apprised of campground closures on the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website. Call to make your reservations.

    • 2

Contact your insurance company to determine what kind of coverage and benefits it offers for RV rentals. Some insurance companies provide short classes to teach you how to drive a motorized RV or a fifth wheel.

    • 3

Obtain a listing of RV rental companies near the starting location of your outdoor adventure. Contact rental companies to determine the types of RVs, their amenities and gas mileage, the prices and special vacation packages offered and availability.

    • 4

Create a budget. Factor in gas mileage and RV rental expenses, food and dining, camping fees and entertainment (like jet ski rentals or cover charges at musical venues).

    • 5

Decide whether driving a motorized RV or a fifth wheel is more beneficial. If you own a V8 truck with a fifth wheel attachment and you live near or in Illinois, this might be a good option, but if you intend to fly to Illinois you should choose a motorized RV. Most RV rental businesses solely rent RVs, not the vehicles with towing or hitching capabilities. Call your preferred RV rental company and reserve one.

    • 6

Provide a valid driving license and credit card when you reserve your RV. You must be 21 or older to rent an RV in Illinois. You will also have to provide contact information including street address, work and cell phone number. Some RV rental agencies require proof of insurance.

    • 7

Arrange airport pickup and transportation to the RV agency. Some RV rental agencies provide pickup and drop off service, but inquire in advance. Pick up your RV, sign the required documents and drive off.
