Uzbekistan Has Neither the Ural River Nor the Ural Mountains

Uzbekistan does not contain the Ural River or the Ural Mountains. Both lie far to the northwest, forming the traditional Europe-Asia boundary.

Where They Are

• Ural Mountains: Run ~2,500 km N-S from Arctic Ocean (Pay-Khoy) to Kazakhstan steppes (Mugodzhar Hills). Highest: Mt. Narodnaya (1,895m). Border between European Russia (west) and Siberia (east).
• Ural River (Jayıq/Zhayyq): 2,428 km. Sources in southern Urals (Russia) → flows south through **Russia (Orenburg)** → **Kazakhstan (Atyrau)** → Caspian Sea. Forms part of Russia-Kazakhstan border.

Uzbekistan's Actual Geography

• Location: Heart of Central Asia, double-landlocked (borders 5 'stans + Afghanistan).
• Major Rivers: **Amu Darya (Oxus)** (south border), **Syr Darya (Jaxartes)** (northeast). Both end in Aral Sea (now largely desert).
• Mountains: **Tien Shan** (northeast, border Kyrgyzstan), **Pamir-Alay** (southeast, border Tajikistan), **Nuratau, Zarafshan, Gissar** ranges.
• Deserts: **Kyzylkum** (red sand, most of territory), **Karakum** fringe.

Why the Confusion?

"Ural" sounds Central Asian; the Urals *are* in Kazakhstan (partly). But Uzbekistan is **1,500+ km southeast** of the Ural River's mouth. Different tectonic, climatic, and historical zones.
