What did Beijing used to be called?

Beijing used to be called Peking. The name "Peking" is derived from the Chinese word "Běijīng", which means "northern capital". This name was first used during the Liao Dynasty (907-1125) and continued to be used until 1949, when the People's Republic of China was founded and the name was officially changed to "Beijing".
