How to Transfer on Metra & CTA

The Regional Transportation Authority oversees all public transportation in Chicago, including the Chicago Transit Authority's buses and trains, Metra commuter rail and Pace bus service to the suburbs. CTA and Metra trains do not accept cash, a transit card must be used to board the trains. These can be purchased at automated stands or manned booths at many stations. Cash is accepted in CTA and Pace buses. If cash is being used, it should be paid in full including transfer fees at the time you board the first bus. The driver will then provide you with a transfer card to use on later legs of the trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a transit card for the cost of the first leg of your trip, plus a $0.25 transfer. Alternatively, pay the cost of the bus ride, plus the $0.25 transfer fee and request a transfer ticket from the bus driver. (Prices as of June 2011).

    • 2

Board the train or ride the bus for the first leg of your trip, to the location where you need to connect with the second leg.

    • 3

Scan your transit card or transfer card as you board the bus or enter the train station. This will deduct the $0.25 transfer fee from the card. Take your card with you.

    • 4

Complete the second leg of your trip and transfer a third time, if necessary. The third leg of your trip will be free, but your transit or transfer card must be scanned.
