How to Use a SmarTrip Card

The SmarTrip card is a rechargeable farecard offered by the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, or WMATA, for rail and bus service. The card holds a stored value of up to $300. You can use a SmarTrip card to pay fares on WMATA Metrobuses and Metrorails, and for other regional mass transit provider vehicles that accept the card as a form of payment. WMATA provides many services and benefits to you , allowing you to get the most out of your card when traveling in the metropolitan region.

      Register your card online to create a SmarTrip account and protect your card balance if the card is lost or stolen. Go to the SmarTrip Card Registration website, select your card type, enter and reenter the card serial number in the fields provided, click the "Submit" button and follow the on-screen instructions. Your card registration will appear in Metro's systems within 48 business hours.

      Walk up to a SmarTrip target -- indicated by the SmarTrip card image -- on a farebox in a Metrobus or other regional transit vehicle, or on top of or inside a Metrorail faregate, to pay a fare with your SmarTrip card. Tap your card to the target one time to pay.

      Recharge your SmarTrip card on a Metrobus, certain regional buses, on Metrorail Passes/Farecards machines, in certain stores such as CommuterStore and certain Giant Foods and CVS stores. To recharge, simply follow the instructions provided on the specific recharge device or by a store associate.

      Contact SmarTrip Customer Service at 888-762-7874 for assistance if your SmarTrip card is lost or stolen. The customer service agent will confirm your information and provide you with an estimated timeframe for the lost or stolen card balance to transfer to a new card.
