How to Install Metal Bands for Shipping

Metal banding is used to secure packages for shipping tools, equipment, parts or machinery. When you install metal bands around a package, you must use a banding tool, banding material--which comes in a roll--and banding buckles. The banding tool grips the band, tightens it, bends it band and cuts it. After the banding is installed, you must also use a tool that's not included in the banding kit, a hammer.

Instructions

    • 1

Don leather gloves and pull enough banding from the roll of banding to wrap around the package. Slide a buckle, from the banding kit, over the end of the metal banding so that the tabs protruding from the buckle are on the side farthest from you.

    • 2

Wrap the band around the package and slide the end through the buckle. Insert the end of the band into the nose slot of the banding tool.

    • 3

Turn the banding tool's handle to tighten the band. Stop turning the handle when the band no longer moves through the buckle.

    • 4

Roll the tool and banding material over the buckle to bend the band. Pull the handle to cut the band.

    • 5

Remove the tool and hammer the end of the band flat. Bend the buckle's tabs over the band and hammer the tabs flat.
