How to Install a R6 Slip-On Exhaust

The Yamaha R6 is middleweight sport bike originally introduced in 1999. It has a 600cc, or cubic centimeter, engine with four valves per cylinder. Essentially a track racing bike with turn signals and lights to make in street legal, this bike is made to go fast through corners. Replacing the rather quiet and heavy stock exhaust canister with a slip-on exhaust serves to lighten the bike. It also helps the engine breathe more freely, creating a throaty exhaust growl thanks to the reduced restriction that a slip-on offers.

Instructions

    • 1

Line up your new exhaust canister with the exhaust system on the bike. Ensure that it is a good fit and that you have the correct piece for your motorcycle. If there is any doubt, check your documentation and get the correct slip-on for your model year.

    • 2

Use your socket wrench to loosen the flange bolt on the exhaust pipe where it exits the fairing. This is the bolt directly below the rider's right-side foot peg. This bolt passes through a collar, which holds the throat of the existing exhaust pipe onto the motorcycle. Do not un-thread this bolt fully; just unscrew it until the collar becomes loose.

    • 3

Loosen the hanger bolt that attaches the exhaust canister to the passenger's right-side foot peg. Use the socket wrench on the front of the hanger, and use the adjustable wrench to hold the backing nut so it will not spin. Un-thread this bolt all the way and remove it. When you do this, the stock exhaust will be free and lift right off the bike.

    • 4

Check that the exhaust gasket is still on the part of the pipe that remains attached to the bike. If it has come off with the old exhaust canister, pull it out of the throat of the pipe and put it back in place.

    • 5

Put the new slip-on exhaust in place. Hold it while you feed the hanger bolt through the mounting tab of your new slip-on and the right-side passenger foot peg bracket. Tighten the hanger bolt with your socket and adjustable wrenches.

Ensure that the collar is in place over the junction between the two pipes and tighten the flange bolt with your socket wrench.
