How to Install an Electrical Hatch in an RV

Recreational Vehicles (RV) have several hatches that can differ greatly in size and shape from make to model. These doors can often become warped through contact or weather. It is not recommended that an RVer add an additional hatch to an RV, as RV space is tightly allocated to the restricted space in the walls of an RV. This is done in an attempt to incorporate as many amenities into the confined space of a travel RV as possible. Replacing a hatch is a moderately easy job for an RVer to do, considering the high cost of specialty repair services.

Instructions

  1. Installing an RV Hatch

    • 1

Measure the hatch precisely before ordering. Don't start the job until the hatch is present. The electrical hatch should not be left open, as rain, dust or other debris may get inside and cause shorts or other damage.

    • 2

Remove the bolts or screws surrounding the perimeter of the hatch with the drill and sockets.

    • 3

Break the perimeter weathering seal with the pry-bar or hammer.

    • 4

Peal the hatch off and away from the RV.

    • 5

Scrape off the old, excess weather sealant from around the port.

    • 6

Apply fresh weather sealant, like caulking, to the edge of the port.

    • 7

Push the hatch into place, firmly against the sealant.

    • 8

Reattach the screws of bolts around the perimeter.

    • 9

Push the sealant into place and against any areas not covered around the edges of the hatch. Apply more sealant if necessary.

    • 10

Slide the hatch door into place and make sure it shuts flush and latches.
