How to Install Exterior RV Light

Exterior lights on an RV can make all the difference when you're in the middle of a pitch-black forest and need to search through the bottom storage or find an earring on the ground. Many RV units come with exterior lights that are operated from the inside, but if you must add the lights yourself, it's an easy, one-day project. If installed properly, exterior lights may even add value to your RV.

  • Exterior light fixture
  • Light bulb
  • 14-gauge red wire

Instructions

    • 1

Find a location on the outside of the RV to mount the fixture. Go inside and make sure there are no obstructions such as lights, wiring or vents on the other side of the wall.

    • 2

Use a pen or marker to mark the place where you'd like to install the fixture. Turn off all the power to the RV. Drill a hole where the light fixture will go on the wall.

    • 3

Cut a hole with a saw or drill and fish the wires to the interior of the RV. Attach the color-coded wires to the electrical outlet. Match similarly colored wires.

    • 4

Tighten the screws on the new fixture and insert the light bulb. Consider using a halogen or energy-efficient light bulb to save you money and energy.

    • 5

Place the lens over the fixture and turn the power on. Test your new light.
