How to Install RV Awning Lights

RV awnings are designed to block sunlight and provide shade protection from the heat of the day. Most are not equipped with lights from the factory so it is necessary to install them yourself if desired. Awning lights provide light for security, working, or relaxing outside. Light strands come packaged with clips designed to fit most standard RV awning poles, and are available in a variety of lengths and bulb sizes. Light strands are available from most camping supply stores, sporting good stores, or RV dealerships.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the awning to determine the length of lights required. For longer strands consider larger or more powerful bulbs, and for shorter strands consider using smaller or fewer lights. Consider the amount of light needed also to ensure you have the right amount without making things too bright.

    • 2

Mark the location on the awning poles with a pencil or pen where you want the lights placed. Measure down from the top of the poles to get equal and even distances so that the lights appear uniform after installation.

    • 3

Place plastic clips at the marks on the poles. The clips are designed with one side to attach evenly to the awning pole and the other to hold the strand or light. Tighten the retention screw located in the side of the clip with a screwdriver to fix it to the metal pole securely. Test the hold by gently pulling at the clip and tighten further if necessary.

    • 4

Unwrap the strand of lights and check that there are no visible defects, or broken or loose bulbs. Lift the strand carefully so that the lights don't strike the awning poles, and slip the light strand cord into the open end of the clips. Adjust the light strand so it is evenly balanced from side to side across the length of the awning.

    • 5

Plug the light's power cord into the RV's power outlet and test operation. If there is no ready outlet, attach an extension cord to the light strand to provide power.
