How to Install Two Piece RV Awnings

RV awnings are often mounted over the RV's main doors to provide sun and rain protection. These awnings are designed to retract like blinds, and almost all are two piece designs -- there is the mounting bracket and the awning itself. The advantages of an awning on an RV include expanding the outside camping area with a shade, protecting the sides of the RV from harmful UV rays and keeping the steps up to the door dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the step ladder next to the area where the awning is to be mounted. Common areas are above the main RV door. Measure out the length of the awning mounting bracket above the door. Mark the dimensions on the RV wall.

    • 2

Drill out the bracket screw holes onto the side of the RV. Prior to measuring, make sure you get the awning high enough to account for the telescoping legs on the awning when opened. Place the mounting bracket on a flat surface and apply silicone caulk to the back. Place the bracket onto the RV wall and align the screw holes with the drilled holes. Press the bracket against the wall to set the caulk and then screw the bracket to the RV.

    • 3

Caulk over the screws to add give them a watertight seal.

    • 4

Bring the awning roller to the bracket and remove the end caps to expose the spindles. Place the spindles into the bracket mounts and tighten the lock clamps at the spindles. These are one way metal bars that go over the spindle, locking the roller onto the awning bracket.

    • 5

Pull the awing out on the roller. Assemble the telescoping awning legs and push them into the corner attachments and then push them onto the ground. Test the awnings tightness and then remove the poles and retract the awning for travel.
