How to Cover an RV Awning

An RV awning is typically housed in a retractable cover during transport. If you have lost your RV cover or the RV never have one to begin with, you can create one with a small plastic tarp and bungee cords. Keeping the awning covered during transport is important to protect it from road grime and inclement weather. You should ensure the cover is on snug to prevent the wind from shearing it off while driving.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the awning from the RV. Use screwdrivers or a power drill to remove the screws and awning from the housing.

    • 2

Set the tarp down on the ground and spread the awning fabric onto the tarp. Cut an awning-sized shape from the tarp, ensuring it is at least 4 inches longer on each side.

    • 3

Retract the awning and place it back onto the RV. Open the awning and place the tarp on top of the awning. Roll the awning up so the tarp rolls with it, like a pinwheel. Ensure the tarp is exposed on the final wrap, so it protects the awning while driving.

    • 4

Wrap the bungee cords around the spiral combination to secure the fabric and tarp together. Push the awning up to the RV and secure it using the awning mounts for transport.
