How to Replace an RV Slideout Cover

If your RV's slideout cover is ripped or worn out, it is not going to protect your slideout from weather and debris as well as it used to. Luckily, replacing the cover involves little hassle, as you can purchase a replacement cover from one of several companies. This time, invest in a cover made of the tightest webbing and the thickest material (usually vinyl or acrylic) in order to maximize its life expectancy.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a measuring tape to measure the size of your current slideout cover. Take care when using your ladder to complete the measurements --- have a partner help you stretch the measuring tape across the span of the slideout cover.

    • 2

Order a replacement awning from a company such as Carefree of Colorado, Tough Top Awnings or any other RV parts manufacturer.

    • 3

Pull out your slideout room to its full extended position. This will stretch the slideout cover as well, so that you can remove it.

    • 4

Hold the awning roller tube in place by placing a cotter pin or screwdriver in the open hole in the roller tube, to prevent the cover from retracting or rolling up.

    • 5

Remove the old cover by unscrewing any screws that are holding the cover to the awning rail that is attached to the RV. Once you have removed the screws, slide the old cover off the awning rail; also pull the cover out of the channel on the roller tube.

    • 6

File down any rough edges or burrs on the awning rail and the roller tube, to prevent your new cover from ripping or snagging.

    • 7

Slide the new cover into the groove of the roller tube and the awning rail. You may need two people for this job --- one person to pull the new cover into the grooves on the roller tube and rail, and another to hold the canopy and feed it to the other person.

    • 8

Test your new awning by opening and closing your slideout room a few times.

    • 9

Replace the screws on either side of the awning rail, to hold the new cover into place.
