How to Replace an RV Refrigerator's Vent Cover

A recreational vehicle's refrigerator works differently than most household fridges. The RV fridge is cooled with heat. While this sounds odd, the system uses propane gas that forces the hot air out of the enclosed fridge, causing condensation and cooling. An RV fridge starts at the freezer, while the cold air falls down to cool the main compartment. The vent cover protects the lower area under the fridge, the area where the propane gas burns via the pilot light.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the RV and set the parking brake. Go to the propane tanks and turn the dial to the Off position. Turn the propane fuel flow valve under the fridge to Off. Turn the main circuit breaker off.

    • 2

Pull the vent cover out from the bottom. Most vent covers use metal arms that are hooked at the end. Pull the bottom out to pop the upper portion hooks off the rails. Wash the underside of the fridge with warm soapy water and wipe away all grit, grease and debris.

    • 3

Blow the compressed air at the pilot light tube to clean off dust and debris. Wipe the end of the pilot light tube with a rag to further clean the tube.

    • 4

Place the replacement vent cover starting with the upper metal hooks. Position the vent at a 45 degree angle and let the hooks attach to the rails. Push the lower portion into the bottom of the fridge and tap the corners to further secure it in position.
