Directions on How to Replace a Vent Lid

The vent lid on an RV becomes brittle after several years of outdoor storage or use. Strong storms containing hail cause cracks or breaks in a vent lid. A faulty vent lid allows rain into your RV, which can cause extensive damage to your furniture, carpeting and walls. Replacement lids are fairly inexpensive and you can make the repairs yourself with a minimum of time and common tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the crank on your RV vent lid from inside the RV to open it fully. The lid will rest open in a vertical position.

    • 2

Place a ladder next to the RV near the vent lid. Climb the ladder and climb on the RV roof if necessary to reach the vent.

    • 3

Place a small screwdriver on the inside of a hinge pin on the vent lid. Tap the screwdriver to move the hinge pin outward and out of the hinge. Repeat this process to remove the second hinge pin on the other side of the vent lid.

    • 4

Grasp a metal tab on the vent lid with a pair of pliers. Bend up the tab to straighten it. Bend all of the metal tabs upward so they are vertical. These metal tabs connect the lid to the inside crank for opening the lid.

    • 5

Grasp the vent lid and pull it straight up and off the RV vent. Slide a new vent lid onto the metal tabs. Bend the metal tabs down to their original position.

    • 6

Replace the hinge pins on each side of the lid by inserting them and tapping them completely into the hinges from the outside edges.
