How to Burp an RV Refrigerator

Recreational vehicles, or RVs, provide arrangements for a home away from home. A "house on wheels" is equipped with regular appliances, like a refrigerator. Sooner or later, RV refrigerators may need to be replaced or repaired. Motor homes that were built before the 1980s came equipped with an ammonia absorption refrigerator. This system requires the RV to be level in order to work properly. A process called "burping" may be in order, which removes the vapor lock created by the ammonia, if the refrigerator was not level for an extended period of time.

  Shut off the electricity and gas running to the refrigerator. Unscrew the connections to the gas and disconnect any wires.

  Remove the screws holding the refrigerator in place. Remove the refrigerator from its compartment.

  Place the refrigerator outside on level ground. Enroll the help of another person to avoid back injury.

  Turn the refrigerator on its side and leave it for two hours. Listen to the refrigerator for the chemicals mixing together. Turn the refrigerator upside-down. Leave the refrigerator in this position for 24 hours.

  Carry the refrigerator back into the RV. Secure the refrigerator back in its compartment. Hook up the electricity and gas lines.
