How to Pull a Toy Hauler

A toy hauler is a trailer with living quarters in the front and a separate garage area in the rear for hauling all-terrain vehicles, golf carts, snowmobiles or motorcycles. Toy haulers are available in the form of a travel trailer or fifth wheel trailer. Both types of trailers are hitched to a tow vehicle that is used to pull the toy hauler to the desired location.

Instructions

  1. Travel Trailer Toy Hauler

    • 1

Chock the wheels of the toy hauler with wood blocks or wheel chocks. Back the tow vehicle in front of the toy hauler so that the hitch ball of the vehicle is 1 foot in front of the hitch jack on the tongue of the trailer. Raise the hitch jack on the trailer tongue so it is 2 to 3 inches higher than the hitch ball on the tow vehicle.

    • 2

Pull the safety pin out of the trailer hitch and raise the locking lever on top of the hitch.

    • 3

Back the tow vehicle so the hitch ball is beneath the jack. Lower the jack to place the trailer hitch on the hitch ball.

    • 4

Push the locking lever down and insert the safety pin. Raise the hitch jack completely. Place the leveling bars on the tongue and move the lever back and forth to increase the tension.

    • 5

Retract the hitch jack completely to place the full weight of the trailer on the hitch ball. Cross the safety chains beneath the hitch and secure to the frame on the tow vehicle. Plug the electrical connector into the outlet on the tow vehicle.

    • 6

Remove the wheel chocks. Slowly pull the tow vehicle forward and lightly tap the brakes to test the coupling. Pull the toy hauler to the desired location.

    Fifth Wheel Toy Hauler

    • 7

Chock the wheels of the fifth wheel with wood blocks or wheel chocks. Raise the stabilizer jacks under the back of the fifth wheel.

    • 8

Open the tailgate on the tow vehicle. Back it up so it is in front of the king pin box on the trailer. Raise or lower the landing gear as needed to place the king pin box level with the skid plate on the fifth wheel hitch in the tow vehicle.

    • 9

Grasp the hitch handle on the hitch and pull the handle out and rotate it so the handle points up. Back up the tow vehicle and slide the king pin into the skid plate. The hitch will click when it has successfully coupled with the trailer.

    • 10

Look in the opening of the hitch to make sure the slide bar is closed. Turn the hitch handle to lock the king pin into the skid plate. Do not pull the handle out.

    • 11

Plug the electrical connector into the outlet on the tow vehicle. Raise the landing gear fully and remove the wheel chocks. Pull the tow vehicle forward slowly and lightly tap the brakes to test the coupling. Pull the toy hauler to the desired location.
