How to Convert a Fifth-Wheel Hitch to a Gooseneck Hitch

Sometimes you must tow trailers with different style hitches. It can be inconvenient to keep switching trucks or hitches, depending upon whether a trailer has a fifth-wheel hitch or a Gooseneck style hitch. Fortunately, you may purchase an adapter that converts a fifth-wheel hitch to a Gooseneck style hitch. You may convert your fifth-wheel trailer to a Gooseneck hitch and use one truck with a gooseneck hitch for all your trailers. A fifth-wheel-to-Gooseneck hitch adapter installation requires only a few basic tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the gooseneck adapter onto the kingpin of the fifth-wheel trailer. The hitch should be facing forward.

    • 2

Adjust the adapter until it is in the position recommended by the manufacturer. Hold the Gooseneck adapter firmly in place.

    • 3

Place a mark in the center of the bolt openings on the adapter. The mark will be the spot on the trailer's kingpin plate where you will drill the holes to mount the adapter.

    • 4

Put a drill bit in the drill. Use the size of drill bit required by the adapter manufacturer for the bolt size.

    • 5

Drill the holes for the adapter. Wipe away any debris with a rag.

    • 6

Push the bolts through the top of the mounting plate into the adapter. Place a washer and a nut on each of the bolts.

    • 7

Turn the bolts clockwise by hand until tight. Tighten the bolts with the wrench until snug.

    • 8

Apply the final tightening of the bolts with the torque wrench. Apply the manufacturer-recommended torque to the bolts.
