How to Convert RV Light to Fluorescent

According to the U.S. Government's Energy Star program, compact fluorescent light bulbs use up to 75 percent less energy than their incandescent counterparts. This is because much of the energy used in incandescent bulbs is lost as heat. In a fluorescent, there's less heat given off -- which has the added bonus of making them less likely to start a fire in your RV. If you're looking to switch your current lights to fluorescent ones, the process is quite simple to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble the housing around your current light bulbs. In RVs, most light fixtures are surrounded by some type of plastic or plexiglass housing, so you'll have to remove it to get to your bulbs.

    • 2

Unscrew the light bulbs from their fixtures.

    • 3

Observe what wattage the current bulb is by looking on the top of the bulb. Typically, the wattage will be listed there. Note also if your bulb tells you the lumens, or amount of light your bulb gives off.

    • 4

Purchase compact fluorescent bulbs that provide the same amount of light as your incandescent bulbs. Typically, the packaging for fluorescent bulbs will indicate the comparable wattage to an incandescent, as well as the lumens for the bulb. For example, the fluorescent equivalent to your 60-watt incandescent could be a 13-watt fluorescent. The lumens for the two bulbs should remain about the same.

You can purchase compact fluorescents at most grocery, hardware and general merchandise stores. Save the receipts just in case you get the wrong color or light output.

    • 5

Screw the new incandescents into your RV light fixtures.

    • 6

Test your light bulbs' output and color. If you are not happy with the results, return the compact fluorescent bulbs to the store and try another bulb with different lumens or color.

    • 7

Replace the housing and screw in the removed screws.
