How to Convert Nautical Miles

Calculating a nautical mile is a simple mathematical process. A nautical mile is a measure used to measure air and sea speeds. It originally was intended to be a standard measurement for sea travel equal to one minute of arc along a meridian, an imaginary line connecting the north and south latitudes. Disagreements on how to measure this distance led to several different standards through the years. The standard used today for measuring a nautical mile is based on a 1929 international agreement that defines a nautical mile to equal approximately 6,076 feet, or exactly 1,852 meters. The United States did not formally adopt this standard until 1954.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply the number of statute miles by 1.15 for a quick conversion from nautical miles to standard miles (statute miles). To get a more precise conversion, multiply the number of statute miles by 1.15078. To convert nautical miles to statute miles, do the reverse and divide the number of nautical miles by 1.15 or 1.15078.

    • 2

Divide the number of feet by 6076 to quickly convert feet to nautical miles. To get a more precise conversion, divide the number of feet by 6076.1155. To convert nautical miles to feet, do the reverse and multiply the number of nautical miles by 6076 or 6076.1155.

    • 3

Divide the number of kilometers by 1.852 to convert kilometers to nautical miles. To convert nautical miles to kilometers, multiply the number of nautical miles by 1.852.

    • 4

Divide the number of meters by 1852 to convert meters to nautical miles. To convert nautical miles to meters, multiply the number of nautical miles by 1852.
