How to Convert Ground Miles to Air Miles

Land travel and air travel both measure distances in miles. For transportation by land, distance is calculated as land miles, or statute miles; for transportation by air, distance is calculated by nautical miles. One nautical mile equals roughly 1.51 land miles.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the land miles you will be traveling. Example, the distance from Key West to Boston is about 1,372 land miles.

    • 2

Apply the conversion equation, land miles x .87 = nautical miles.

    • 3

Calculate 1372 land miles x .87. This equals 1193.6 nautical miles.
