Be aware that of the two measurements, the mile is longer. So, if you want to convert from miles to kilometers you know you'll have to multiply.
Determine how far you're going in miles before you set up the equation. Then, multiply that number by 1.61. For instance, if you need to go 10 miles to find the next rest area, convert it to kilometers with the following equation:
10 miles x 1.61 = 16.1 kilometers
Reverse the equation to convert kilometers to miles. Since the mile is the larger unit, you'll need to divide the number of kilometers by 1.61. Using the same example as in Step 2, you can set up the equation like this:
16.1 kilometers/1.61 = 10 miles
Convert miles per hour to kilometers per hour by multiplying mph by 1.61. If you were traveling at 50 mph and applied this formula then it would look like:
50 mph x 1.61 = 80.5 kph
Convert kilometers per hour to miles per hour by multiplying kph by .621. So, traveling at 75 kph would translate to:
75 kph x .621 = 46.575 mph
