How to Replace RV Taillights

The taillights on many RVs are also your brake and directional lights. These lights tell everyone behind your rig that the RV is going to make a left or right turn, or is slowing down. Part of the checklist before taking your home on wheels out on the road is to make sure that all the lights are working properly. There are two basic types of RV taillight encasements: One is surrounded by screws and the other is the "squeeze and pull" variety.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the ladder to reach the lights at the top of the rig if one or more of them needs replacement.

    • 2

Squeeze the orange light casing to create a gap between the frame holding the light cover and the cover. Wiggle the casing away from the small tabs that hold the casing in place by wiggling side to side or top to bottom.

    • 3

Unscrew the burned-out light and replace it with a bulb of the proper wattage and size.

    • 4

Snap the cover back in place.

    • 5

Use your screwdriver to unscrew the brake lights by removing the three or four screws from the metal O-ring encasing the rear brake light cover.

    • 6

Set the O-ring and screws aside, and remove the plastic cover. Replace the old bulb with a new one.

    • 7

Replace plastic casing, the metal O-ring and the screw back in place.
